As the host of “River Monsters,” Jeremy Wade chases all kinds of sea creatures, but that doesn’t mean he actually eats that much fish.
“It’s sort of out of conscience, I like to know where the fish has come from,” Wade, 60, told Page Six on Thursday. “I do really like fish but I like to eat sustainably produced fish where possible and I think it’s quite ironic that very often you can’t find out where it came from, that in the information age, if you want to find out where the fish in a shop or restaurant [has come from], nobody seems to know.”
But when filming, Wade revealed that he and his crew often become both fishermen and chefs.
“Sometimes we are semi-living off the land, in parts of the Amazon or whatever, so we might catch something and have that sort of supplement our portable food that we’ve brought in. Something like piranhas … they’re not particularly tasty but sometimes it’s good to sort of reverse the roles.”
The show’s seventh season spans the globe, taking Wade to Alaska, Botswana, Cambodia, Canada and Fiji.
“River Monsters” airs Thursdays at 9 ET on Animal Planet.
